Eco-Friendly Trends in Food Service
In recent years restaurants have been going green and implementing sustainable practices to conserve energy, reduce waste, and provide healthier offerings.
The Food Service Industry creates a lot of waste, from food waste through to trash created by single-use plastics such as straws, take-out containers, and to-go cups. The packaging is used for only a few minutes and then tossed out in the trash. Traditional food service containers take 25-100 years to breakdown after they are only used once for a brief period of time.
These products inevitably end up in landfills, or worse, in our oceans where they injure wildlife.
Thankfully, many food service retailers are beginning to join our sustainable community! We’re starting to see more:
- Efforts to reduce food waste through education
- Reusable or compostable straws and utensils
- Reusable or compostable to-go cups
- Recycled or Compostable clamshell containers for take-out
- Providing recycle or compost bins for customer use
This is a wonderful start, but we still have work to do!
