Why Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging?

Posted on

Recently campaigns to ban single use plastics (such as shopping bags, water bottles, and drinking straws) have been gaining momentum, with both consumers and local government beginning to hold retailers and brands accountable for their impact on the environment.

With more and more goods being sold via e-commerce, consumers are beginning to turn their critical eye to wasteful packaging - with good reason. Packaging represents almost two thirds of all trash in the U.S. and as e-commerce becomes more popular this amount will only grow.

How do we Solve this Packaging Problem?

By reducing or eliminating packaging.

Sometimes it is not possible to completely eliminate product packaging. In this case choosing the most appropriate eco-friendly packaging for your product is crucial - taking into account the environment in which it will be used, and its end of life solution.

Why Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging?

  • Reduce your Carbon Footprint. Choose packaging that is made from recycled materials to reduce consumption of resources. Choose packaging that is compostable or recyclable to ensure that your packaging doesn’t end up in a landfill or the ocean!
  • Demonstrate your sustainability knowledge to customers. Your packaging is often the first experience your customer will have with your product - eco-friendly packaging lets your customers know that your brand is authentic in its commitment to sustainability.
  • Combat “Over-Packaging”. Eco-friendly packaging design is not only about the materials used in production. Packaging can also be made more sustainable in a number of other ways: folding boxes that require no glue, flexible pouches that take up less space in transit, using single materials for easier disposal, designs requiring less raw material.
  • Reduce Shipping Costs. Eco-friendly packaging minimizes the amount of packaging material used to ship goods, meaning that it’s more economical to ship from production to the warehouse, and to customers!
  • Reduce Contamination of Recycling or Compost. Eco-Friendly packaging avoids using mixed materials where possible, and this includes labels! Mixed materials (a recyclable box with plastic window, for example) and standard adhesive labels used on otherwise compostable or recyclable packaging can ruin efforts to recycle or compost by damaging machinery and contaminating the process.

Switching to compostable, recycled, or recyclable packaging can have a significant impact - it diverts waste away from landfills and encourages your customers to be more mindful of the waste that they produce.
