Marine Plastic Pollution

Posted by Rebecca Sims on

The Plastic Pollution Problem

Our oceans have become littered with plastic pollution. Thousands of birds, sea mammals, and fish ingest microplastics or become tangled in our plastic waste.

Watching videos and seeing photos of the harm caused by plastic pollution are very upsetting and may make the situation seem hopeless, but as businesses we have the opportunity to set an example of environmental responsibility to our customers and to other businesses. There are steps we can take, to clean up our oceans and to encourage others to do the same!

How Can Your Business Combat Plastic Pollution?

  • Evaluate your products and packaging
Could you manufacture in a more sustainable way? Can you reduce your packaging or switch to an eco-friendly option? Does your packaging live up to your sustainable brand promise?
  • Assess End-of-Life scenarios for your packaging
This requires evaluating your business, products, packaging, and the behaviour of your customers. Will your customers use your products at home, or on the go? Do you provide means or education for your customers to properly dispose of compostable or recyclable products? There are different sustainable packaging options for all kinds of products and end of life scenarios.
  • Encourage your customers to dispose of their waste responsibly
This can be done by providing compost or recycle bins for customers to properly dispose of their waste in-store. You should also educate your customers by printing your sustainability information right on the packaging and labels, or by using stickers to indicate that your packaging is compostable.
  • Take part in local and global initiatives!
Your business can commit to a Plastic Free July, or take the National Geographic Planet or Plastic pledge. You can help out in your local community by participating in clean-ups, or pushing for more accessible recycling and composting programs.
